Specialist Mentoring

Specialist One-to-One Study Skills & Strategy Support

Non-Medical Helper (NMH) support provides funded, one-to-one human assistance for university students with disabilities, mental health conditions, or specific learning difficulties to access their studies. Funded through Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA), this support includes specialist mentors, study skills tutors, note-takers, and readers/scribes to help manage academic work.

Key Aspects of NMH Support:

  • Eligibility & Access: Recommended through a DSA Needs Assessment Report (NAR) and approved by student finance bodies.

  • Support Roles:

    • Specialist Mentors: Support students with mental health difficulties or Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) in managing anxiety, stress, and workload

    • Specialist Study Skills Tutors: Help with time management, research techniques, and organization.

    • Note-takers & Support Workers: Assist with lectures, workshops, or in the library.

    • Exam Support: Readers, scribes, and invigilators.

  • Flexibility: Support can be provided in person or remotely, tailored to individual student needs.

  • Service Delivery: Arranged directly with assigned providers based on the recommendations in the DSA letter.
